Server Synchronizer

Server Synchronizer lets you keep yourself current with sites you visit or download from often. GetRight can search a server and find the files which you do not have on your computer or the ones that have changed.

Properties

Type (GetRight Pro Only)

• GetRight Pro allows you to choose from several different types of synchronizer items. Some can just be a login (so you can drag-and-drop any files you want to upload), while others can do different sorts of upload or download synchronizing. Different tabs will be hidden or shown depending on this setting.

Server

• Name: This is the name you want this synchronization to be called. It should make it easy for you to see what you are synchronizing, especially if you have several synchronizations from the same server.
• FTP Path or HTTP URL : The starting point for the search and synchronize. This can be either an FTP site (or sub directory or that web site) or an HTTP web site (or page within the site).
• Username and Password Login : If the HTTP or FTP site requires a login, you can configure that here.
• Depth This determines whether or not you want to synchronize one particular directory or web page, the page and one level deeper, or the entire site.

FTP: This will only search subdirectories of the primary search directory. It will not 'back up' to the root of the server if the search is not begun there.

HTTP: This will only search web pages in the main search directory or subdirectories of it. It will not follow links to parent directories or to other domains. If you want to search an entire web site, be sure you begin at the base url. It will, however, show results which are found in other directories or on other domains.

My Computer

• Synchronize with local folder: This is the 'base' directory on your computer where things will be saved. The synchronizer will recreate the directory structure of the server, and create subdirectories from here.
• Options: These options determine how the synchronizer should work. Whether it should get all the files, or just ones that are now or changed. If you are synchronizing a site regularly, this can save time, by only downloading new or different files.
• The "Download files with different sizes/dates. (Overwrite)" option will delete any existing older file with the same name when downloading the updated file.
• The "Download files with different sizes/dates. (Rename)" will rename the new file so it has -### in the name so it will not overwrite the existing file. So C:\Downloads\image.gif would become C:\Downloads\image-001.gif, etc
• Don't go forever... This option prevents the synchronizer from searching forever on big sites. (Unless you want it to.) If you switch this option OFF, be careful if synchronizing big sites unattended...

Filters

• Filtering : It's not always necessary to get every file on a site, this allows the search to be more refined. If you are looking only for EXE files or MP3 files, etc. this filter can be used accordingly.

Results

• Results Options: This let's you choose whether you want to be able to look at (and select) your search results before adding them to the main download window. If you are sure that you want to download all the search results, then the "Automatic..." setting can save a step.

Advanced (GetRight Pro Only)

• Smart Replace: This is a very useful feature if you often upload files that are also available to users for downloading. (Such as when I upload a new getright_setup.exe when a new version of GetRight is released.)
• GetRight Pro will upload the file to a different name by adding .GetRight to the name of the file it is uploading. Then when the file is complete, it deletes any filename.old version and renames the current version to be filename.old and then renames newest .GetRight version to take the place of the original file. It is a little bit of complicated renaming, but it all happens automatically in GetRight Pro.

On our servers, this not only keeps the length of time that the file is unavailable for downloading to fractions of a second, but by renaming something from filename to filename.old, anyone currently downloading the file is able to finish the older version they started (not all servers may do this, but ours do!)

QuickSync

QuickSync lets you search web sites or FTP sites for files to download. It is similar to the GetRight browser, but can show the results for an entire web site at once. It is helpful if you want to download a lot of files scattered throughout a web site. (All the images or ZIP or MP3 files, for example.) Or if you want to download the entire web site, it can do that, too!

Unregistered users may use QuickSync once each time GetRight is run--then have to close and restart GetRight to do it again. Buying GetRight of course allows you to use this as much as you want.

QuickSync vs Server Synchronizer: QuickSync is intended for sites you wish to match with once, such as to grab all the images or sound files. Server Synchronizer is intended for sites you wish to repeat and match with your computer often, such as making a backup copy of the files for your web server.
