Encapsulated Objects Editor

Access: Click any cell in the Obj column (Editor 2)

The Encapsulated Objects Editor allows storage of any type of file, or "object," inside an ID3v2 tag. Store virtually any type of file, from simple text files, to movies, to executables - even other MP3s.

To determine if a tag already contains encapsulated objects, examine the Obj column on Editor page 2. If one or more objects have been detected within a tag, the column contains a number representing the number of objects found. For access to a tag's objects, or to add, remove, edit, or open objects, click on a cell in this column to execute the Encapsulated Objects Editor.

The Objects Editor provides the options to:

  • Clear Clear the object table and reload it from existing tag data.
  • Reset Restore Editor to its default proportions.
  • Clear Clear the list of all objects.
  • Save Save an object to an external file on your hard drive.
  • Open Open an object with the program associated with its file type on your system.
  • Delete Row Remove an object from a tag
  • Up Navigate the editor to the previous file/tag.
  • Down Navigate the editor the next file/tag.
  • Add Files Add one or more objects selected in the Browser File Window, top right, to the object list/table.

Adding Objects -

Browse to the file or files you want to add using the file Browser in the upper section. To add a single object, double-click its file name, or click the Add button after highlighting the name. Add multiple files by highlighting multiple files, then clicking the Add button. The file name itself is the only required field for an object. However, if multiple objects are to be stored in a tag, each object must have a unique Description.

An internal list of over 500 MIME types is searched for each object added. If an object's file extension matches a listed MIME type, the type is entered automatically in the MIME Type column. If a match is not found, the default MIME type of "application/octet-stream" is entered. The MIME type is not a required field, and can be removed from an object by selecting "None" from the drop down list of MIME types. If a listed object is already in the tag, the Location column contains the word "tag." If it has not yet been added to the tag yet, it contains the location of the object on your hard drive. New objects are not added until the OK, Up, or Down button is pressed.

To open an object, double-click its file name in the Object List (lower section). The object is sent to Windows with a request to open it in whatever program is associated with that type of file on your system.

Note that in the Main Editor you can cut, copy, paste, or delete objects from tags using a popup menu in the same way as ordinary text. The Single-Tag Popup's "Delete" removes one object per execution (the first one found in a tag), while the Multi-Tag Popup's "Delete" removes all objects at one time.
