Capitalization Editor

Access: Menu > Edit > Capitalization Editor, <Ctrl+S>, Capitalization Editor Toolbar button

The Capitalization Editor contains two separate-but-similar capitalization editors useful for creating your own custom capitalization rules. They can be applied to file name and/or tag field edits, when the program auto-capitalizes on its own, or when you manually instruct it to do so by choosing "Cap Rules" from a Main Editor popup menu.

Capitalization Editor

Anti-Capitalization Editor:

Use the Anti-Cap Editor to inform the program of particular words and/or phrases that you would NOT like to have capitalized when a file is renamed or a tag field is edited. The Active List on the right holds words and phrases that are not to be capitalized. The Inactive List on the left can hold items that are currently being allowed to be capitalized, but are being kept available in case they need to be returned to "active duty." The Editor contains a brief, default list of common articles, conjunctions, and short prepositions that are kept present in the Editor at all times and cannot be removed. Any or all of them, however, including default items, can be transferred from the Active List into the Inactive List, or vice versa, by using the left-right arrow buttons.

Add your own items to the list by typing them into the edit box and clicking the Add button or pressing the Enter key. Custom items created can be removed by highlighting one or more in a list and pressing the Delete button. Use the Highlight Custom Entries button to help identify items you have added to the list yourself. Button Load Default Items clears both lists and reloads the Active List with default items.

Check the Enable Anti-Cap checkbox to have the Active List enabled in the system and to have the list applied to future renames and tag edits. The Anti-Capitalization List can also be enabled or disabled using the "Anti-Cap" checkbox on the Options Panel. When Anti-Cap is active, a minus sign (-) appears appended to the capital "A" on the Auto-Capitalize enable/disable button on the Center Toolbar (a plus-or-minus sign "±" will appear instead, if the Exact-Capitalization List, described below, is also active). You can click this button to cycle Anti-Cap between on and off. Note that listed items must be "embedded" in text to have anti-capitalization applied: single words qualify if they have a space on each side, while phrases must be found with a space on the left.

Exact-Capitalization Editor:

The Exact-Capitalization Editor lists words and phrases you would like to have capitalized EXACTLY as they appear in the list (spaces are shown as caret symbols). The Active List on the right holds items that are to be capitalized as shown, while the Inactive List on the left can hold any items you don't want acted upon now but want to keep available for return to the Active List if needed. Any or all items can be transferred from the Active List to the Inactive List, or vice versa, by using the left-right arrow buttons.

Add your own items to the list by typing them into the edit box and clicking the Add button, or by pressing the Enter key. Custom items created can be removed by highlighting one or more, then pressing the Delete button.

Check the Enable Exact-Cap checkbox to have the Active List enabled in the system and have it applied to future renames and tag edits. The Exact-Capitalization List can also be enabled or disabled with the "Exact-Cap" checkbox on the Options Panel. When Exact-Cap is active, a plus sign (+) appears appended to the capital "A" on the Auto-Capitalize enable/disable button on the Center Toolbar (a plus-or-minus sign "±" will appear instead if the Anti-Capitalization List, described above, is also active). You can click this button to cycle Exact-Cap between on and off.

Enable Auto-Cap:

Automatically capitalize all words in a filename or cell text after an editing event changes it's content. When Auto-Cap is enabled, the Auto-Capitalize enable/disable button on the Center Toolbar shows a capital "A" . When disabled, the button shows a small letter "a" (a plus, minus, or plus-or-minus may be appended instead, depending upon whether Anti-Cap and/or Exact-Cap are also active - see below). The Auto-Capitalize button can be clicked to cycle Auto-Cap between on and off. Auto-Cap can also be enabled or disabled using the "Auto-Cap" checkbox on the Options Panel.

Only apply when Auto-Cap is enabled:

Modifies which capitalization options are presented on the Auto-Capitalize button (Center Toolbar) as it is repeatedly clicked through available options. Capitalization features are applied in the Editor in accordance with the status of this option, as well as whether Anti-Capitalization and Exact-Capitalization (above) are enabled:

Anti-Cap and Exact-Cap are both enabled -

  • None Applied none are applied
  • Anti-Cap and Exact-Cap are applied*
  • Auto Cap Auto-Cap, Anti-Cap, then Exact-Cap are applied

Only Anti-Cap is enabled -

  • None Applied none are applied
  • Anti-Cap is applied*
  • Auto Cap Auto-Cap then Anti-Cap are applied

Default Capitalization Options Default Capitalization Options:

The capitalization function used to perform routine capitalizations can be adjusted to capitalize or not capitalize the first letter after specific symbols or characters, in accordance with your preferences:

Default Capitalization Options

Check the box to the left of a listed item to have the first letter that appears after it capitalized, whenever auto-capitalization is performed by the program.

Note that capitalization rules are generally performed in the following order: First the Default Capitalization Options above are applied, then any auto-edit capitalization options that are enabled on the Options Panel or Rename Page, then the Anti-Capitalization rules, and finally the Exact-Capitalization rules.
